Known lost WADs of our history?

Betray.wad - well at least the original 1995 unaltered standalone release of MAP33 Betray from the original Xbox version of Doom II included in the ports of Doom 3 Limited Collector's Edition and Resurrection of Evil. There is no evidence of this map ever having an official standalone prior to 2005, as no official source prior to 2005 has ever been found in any form.

I found betray.wad in my Shareware Cds Collection

@thestarrover is that the real original release of Betray with it's correct compile date?

The timestamp, 02/1995, matches the one mentioned in the betray.txt file included with xboxspec.zip. The map is aesthetically slightly different, there are more enemies and the doors are ummarked. I could not find any details on this level online, however the cd in which I found the map was published in 1995 (according to archive.org). I'm not an expert on these things, but I think there's a lot of chances it's the original version.

A few lost projects that I was involved in back in the late 90s. There are a few others, which I'll try to get around to documenting in the near future.

Doom Resurrection (full version) - an early ZDoom megawad, started around March/April 1998. The only two level designers signed up were Tommie Quick and myself. I believe Tommie had to cut things short for RL reasons, and ended up releasing just the first five levels. I had some preliminary work done on a boss map at the time, which was going to be called something like Lair of the Traitor. There's a note that Tommie was making a level called Chemical Works, but I don't know if this was renamed for the release or was a sixth map he was working on. The original storyline was quite different than that used in the five level release:

After the previous invasions of hells minions, the governments on earth could no longer deny the existence of extra-terrestrial life. Slowly but surely, the alien races that the government had known about were slowly introduced into society. After a few years, the earth, and the surrounding solar system, became a central point for alien activity.

In order to control this activity, the governments on earth set up a special force called the ECF (Extra-terrestrial Control Force.) Many of the earth's finest space marines and soldiers were enlisted into this elite force. One of which, was the highest of them all. The marine known throughout the world as the man who single handily saved earth from everlasting chaos & destruction. That man is you. The space marine that beat the forces of hell many times before.

The ECF was set up. Agents (as they had now become known) were placed throughout the entire solar system and also on a small number of planets just on the outer perimeters of the solar system. Any illegal and unknown alien activity would be quickly detected and controlled. The new system was then classified as safe.

Under the control of you, the system began to work. Many attempts were made to enter the solar system by other non sanctioned extra-terrestrial species but these were soon controlled. The ship in which they were travelling would either be shot down or tracked until it landed where the offending alien entities would be tried and either killed or sent back to the galaxy from whence they came.

The UAC had been closed down and in most minds, had been forgotten. New companies took over the UAC's functions. Core, a large company set up to develop new weapon technology began to dominate the industrial economy. Its founders set up huge new factories to cope with the demand for its goods. All in all, everything was going well.

Until one day, something went wrong. Something went very wrong. The one thing that human society had forgotten, the one weakness it had overlooked, was about to become its downfall.

Doom Episode 5 - started somewhere around September 1999, and died a death in September 2001. It looks like only 1 complete map was ever made for this, by Martin Schultz. I have three other very early WIP maps, one by DiSTuRBeD and the other two by myself. One of my maps was going to be a mashup of re-textured parts of Doom 1 levels, which funnily enough ended up being the concept behind KDiZD's super secret level (I can't remember if this is just coincidence or I proposed the idea based off E5). Obviously the texture wad for this project has been with the community for quite a while.

Perfect - started around March 1999 as a project loosely inspired by the Darkening, and later morphed into an unofficial Darkening Episode 3 when Ola Bjorling joined the team to provide a brand new texture .wad. I have a few WIP levels for this, but unfortunately they all use a pre-Ola texture .wad which I appear to have lost. Many (but certainly not all) of the textures made by Ola ended up in OTEX years later. I have the storyline for this project, too:

It's been over six years since the first invasion.  You've been through moon bases, half destroyed cities, alien worlds,
even hell itself.  But at last it all seems to be over...

Earth is still being rebuilt, its population having returned from the Jupiter space station that they fled to when Earth itself was over-run by hellspawn.  Now is a time of co-operation and peace amongst mankind. You yourself are helping to rebuild your home city, where the portal connecting Hell to Earth was opened, although initially you had been stationed on Mars in case of a new invasion.

However, the task of attempting to return Earth to its former glory has used up a lot of resources.  Even the UAC, with its dozens of mining colonies, are unable to keep up with the demand.  It is decided to send a couple of the enormous ships that the Earth's population were evacuated in back to the Jupiter space station, as a lot of useful machinery was left behind there.

And that's when it started again.

Three weeks went past.  Nothing was heard from either of the ships during that time.  Some feared the worst, others suspected that the old ships had merely got problems with their communications equipment.  You knew what had happened.  They were back.

You were contacted by the military shortly afterwards.  Being one of the few survivors of an encounter with the hellspawn, you had been deemed an "expert" on the matter of killing hellspawn several years ago.  The played you a message that one of the ships had managed to get through.

"...oh god!...everyone dead, dying or worse...zombies...other ship destroyed...I'm...few left...Captain died three days ago...bit him in too...please, help us!...jesus, what the hell is that?!?"

There was no doubt in anyone's mind.  You were sent to the nearest shuttle launch pad and boarded the fastest shuttle they had.  Once more unto the breach...

Update the list with other known lost/missing WADs. I really didn't expect there to be so many lost WADs! There are considerable portions of history that never saw the light of day, including ambitious projects that probably would have had an iconic reputation if they had come out.

The original first release of Alien Vendetta with the self-extracting installer.

It is mentioned in this 2001 post by @Linguica. Unfortunately that version was almost immediately replaced with the the well known av-extracted.zip release. It seems impossible to find anywhere.

I think about Sigvatr's Hell Superior from time to time for some reason:

Likely no more than 2 maps were made and the screenshots are gone now. Another thread appeared 5 years later with a YT video (that is now also gone)

Not much to go on unless anyone knows if anything surfaced anywhere outside Doomworld or the 2 levels survived somewhere.

I saw a YouTube video of it being played, particularly the rumored columbine map. If that video was a hoax? I got no clue.

Hopefully these haven't been mentioned already

  • Darkwave1-4 and 6-16 (only 5, 17, 24, 32 and the sodfinal maps are accounted for)
  • Early versions of sunder.wad, when there were less than ten maps and they were in a different order.
  • Dark Plutonia
  • Several early maps from hexen (and possibly a whole hub) were erased and replaced iirc
  • Whatever existed of the Doom64 sequel
  • If we're naming WIP things that never materialised (like kdikdizd) I'll put in a mention for Necromantic Thirst, Kama Sutra 2, Scythe X...

Two of the lost works by the creator of Hell Revealed.

Yonatan Donner's Deathmatch Collection (YDDMT.ZIP)

Escape from Hell (YDHLESC.ZIP)

These don't appear to have survived in any form unless both were included in old Shareware or Shovelware CD-ROMs in the mid to late 1990s.

The original standalone releases of certain deathmatch levels from the DWANGO PWADs from back in the day and the ones that appeared to had never got standalone releases outside of the DWANGO compilations.

A couple examples of PWADs are as follows:

GITSOME3.WAD - DWANGO12.WAD MAP01
GITSOME2.WAD - DWANGO12.WAD MAP04
MEINGOTT.WAD - DWANGO12.WAD MAP16

Also got to mention is at least three lost deathmatch-only MegaWADs whose maps were used as sources for the majority of maps in the DWANGO series. These are PLAGUE.WAD, PLAGUE2.WAD and POGUE4.WAD.

Hopefully, @Doomkid can find answers to the mystery of these PWADs. Also, @Doomkid should update the map list on the DWANGO article for DoomWiki to include the recent PWAD sources that I've found, which can be found on the second page of my project where I disassemble various compilation PWADs from the mid-1990s up until the late-2010s.

I have a couple of those single-maps saved somewhere, I’ll look for them. Also just to clarify, Dwango5 Map23 for example being attributed to FRAGFEST.wad is incorrect - it’s PIZZA.wad: https://www.wad-archive.com/wad/Death-to-Venus

I’m thinking someone may have edited it slightly and re-named it before Aikman found it and added it to Dwango5. Similar to how Map12 comes from NEWWEST.wad, which was just a re-named and slightly modified version of PAR-002C.wad.

As far as SEMFINAL.wad and SEATTLE.wad go, fodders (an oldschool UK deathmatch fan who has been gone for years) mentioned it in a 2006 post in this thread: https://forums.zdaemon.org/viewtopic.php?t=7903&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

There’s an issue of PC Zone from 1995 that talks about the wad and tourney: https://archive.org/details/PC_Zone_32_November_1995

There’s also an old UseNet thread about it: https://groups.google.com/g/rec.games.computer.doom.playing/c/xAigFbuwpTs

Even though it’s just a Map01 edit, with all this (albeit old) documentation and popularity in its day, I’d be surprised if there’s not a copy out there waiting to be found.

Darkwave0000 is still active on French Doom Community, I think you can just ask him for them, with the help of translators I guess.

Oh, suddenly remembered something. CFD has  discussed Sunder since its original release. Maybe there are people who still have the beta version of the maps.

Don't worry about Necromantic Thirst. It's still in development and I've seen some very promising screenshots. (Layout etc) And Wilou said he is making gigantic maps. ;)
