Unpopular Doom Opinions

Hell Revealed is a little bit overrated.

Hm, I would say HR2 instead. I've noticed a lot of people consider it superior to the original, but I personally found it vastly inferior from every single point of view, and still stand behind what I said in my HR2 review 100%.

Similarly, I also think Stardate 20x7 is a "bad" sequel, if only because it's Stardate in name and purple-only, it's otherwise completely different from 20x6. I think it would've worked much better if it was named differently.

Doom's maps were better than Doom 2's ones (honorable mentions for Dead Simple, Gotcha!, and Monster Condo).

Once again not an unpopular opinion. This still falls under the general consensus of Doom being a better game than Doom 2 was, whose only redeeming qualities tend to be only some new features it had, some nice maps and MIDIs here and there, and the expanded bestiary, but otherwise an inferior product.

Unpopular opinions, eh? I've got a couple I could share. The most unpopular one might be this:
Eviternity is overrated. The maps look gorgeous, but with a couple notable exceptions (like MAP31) the fights range between boring and infuriating. The infuriating part mostly comes from the DEHACKED enemies, which are awful, especially the astral cacodemons. And in coop most levels just turn into a mindless spammage of hoards of enemies that almost reminds me of TimeOfDeath's maps. Basically the entire megawad feels like an overhyped showcase of the OTEX texture pack, nothing more, nothing less.

On a related note, here's another unpopular opinion: maps that take over an hour to beat, while impressive, aren't at all fun to play. The only exception to this that I can think of is MAP30 from NOVA: The Birth, but that's only because it's basically like playing 5 smaller separate levels in a row.

Your disagreement makes me better in this thread, bro. It's called the UNPOPULAR Doom opinions, which means the more people oppose to you, the better opinion you have in this reversed thread.

This is sounding less like a critique and more like a glowing endorsement!

This is a fact, not an opinion!

I didnt like Final Doom as much as I like Doom 2, UDoom, Heretic and Duke Nukem 3D.

Plutonia is acceptable but TNT has a lot of boring maps. Really boring to play but it is still Doom so that could make it a 6.0 for that reason. The only reason I play it is that it is Doom despite having very boring maps.

Hexen, despite having better soundtracks, had worse game play than Heretic. So the game play of Heretic is far better in my eyes.

What I like about TNT is the epic soundtrack of map 6.

Ultimate Doom:

Limbo is a decent map. Not hard to memorize.

Unholy Cathedral is not hard to memorize.

Episode 3 is the best of the bunch.

Episode 1 is my least favorite.

Unruly Evil is not that bad.

"Demons on the Prey" is the best soundtrack, hands down.

Doom II:

Monster Condo is one of the best maps.

Nirvana doesn't suck as much as most people say.

Downtown is a great map, Suburbs absolutely sucks.

Final Doom:

Mount Pain and Metal are not that bad. (Maybe I'm biased bc of the music)

Ballystix is my favorite map.

Mill is the worst.

All of Plutonia sucks. Go 2 it sucks.

Speed is the best map.

I'm not a fan of brutal doom. I don't like it at all.

With TNT maybe.

But Plutonia is the peak Doom Experience

Hahaha, you got me.

Wait, I have to scan you mind, and I saw you're pretty good at running maps, so you didn't tell me the truth ;P

Let me know your opinion after you try.

K, I did it. Here you go:

I didn't notice until I watched the footage, but I actually forgot to grab the blue armor, even though that was the entire reason I fought the pinkies in that area. Lmao.

Anyway, this level is pretty RNG-dependent on Nightmare. I didn't count the number of attempts, but it had to be around 50, including some experimentation with different strategies. Funny that the one and only time I exited was on a run where I made such a glaring mistake. Maybe the level is more lenient than I think, or maybe I was just very lucky. If anyone can do this three times consecutively, I'm very interested in seeing it.

I still think E1M3 and E1M5 are probably even harder, but I've never really tried beating them under the same conditions (nightmare, pistol start, saveless.)

I think you can get the Blue Skull Key at the way out, so there won't be that many Demons running around? I didn't actually do a close research to it. I did try NM Speed yesterday for a few times (of course I didn't beat it). Since I skipped things like Armor and Plasma Rifle, the Red Skull Key area is really tough... This map requires at least quite a bit of movement skill since it's kind of narrow and there are also monsters running around. It is rather difficult IMO.

E1M3 is rough for sure, but I think you are able to beat it for sure, judging from the skills you showed in this video.

I finished E1 and E3 on Nightmare by doing saves but I couldnt beat E2 M6, not even by doing saves.

I cannot get out of the dark maze alive.

In my first play, I couldnt even get out of the door in the dark maze, not even by 5 different saves. I replayed the map again and in my second time, I got blocked by that baron of hell just after I could get out of the door. And again there is no way to move further.

E2 M6 is the hardest map for me on Nightmare and I cannot beat E2 M6 on Nightmare therefore I couldnt finish E2 on Nightmare.

This video is from my first playing the map.

In my second playing the map, I got out of that door with the key but I was blocked by the baron of hell just out of the door this time. And I couldnt move any further. Blocked by the baron of hell this time.

I agree on this one. I think Doom maps work best in smaller sizes. When they're too big and intricate it starts to feel like a chore, especially when you're trying to find all of the secrets.

My interest starts to seriously dwindle at the 15 minute mark tbh.

Ye gods, that was a really bad save there. I noticed you don't use sprint until you've died like 7-8 times, walking around in that brawl is certain death.

Also, I love how all your saves are just variations of the word "Nightmare", you really do have a fixation with that difficulty.

I'm generally fine up until around 25-30 minutes for a good map. I can last as long as 45 minutes on an excellent map, but on average I'd say 20 minute mark is long enough. After that I start to lose interest, but it really does depend on the map and how much I'm enjoying it.

Relatable, but it depends a lot on what I'm playing. Slaughter maps usually keep me busy for hours but they don't bore me.

I tend to lose my interest primarily when I stop having any clue where or what I should be going. Other people can spend hours figuring out where to go on maps, not me.

Doom 3 is more fun than 64. I mean it got a lot of tha same thing I don't like about that, the cramped levels, the linearity, but man 64 just has sssoooooooooooooooooo many hell knights at the end of the game and all you got a shotgun to kill him with. MAAAAANNNNGGG that's boring. takes foreverrrr >_< at least they enemies have the decency to DIE in Doom 3 :p
