Known lost WADs of our history?

Recommended Posts

I heard there was a Void 2 planned but we never heard from Cyb again, which is sad.

Shores Of ZDoom was just so promising. It looked like it was quite a way there and then silence.

Not sure if this one counts...

The hell levels in Threshold of Pain II just looked so good, I really do hope we get to experience it.

On another note relating to this, it was pretty awesome to finish off a lost Golden Souls level 6 years later. Astral Temple always had a sense of mystery to me before I finished it off for Batandy.

I remember how there was going to be a total conversion by Paul "Moe" Fleschute called Ultimate Invasion, and some members that were going to work on the project include Mark Klem, Nick "Nightmare" Baker, Roger Ritenour, and even skillsaw! It's been announced since 1998, and to this day, never has there been a beta release (unless you consider Invasion 2 an appetiser), and never again has it been mentioned. And there's Eternal Doom IV: Return from Oblivion, that will never, ever be completed, considering Team TNT is dead and gone since the passing of Ty Halderman.

From Paul Fleschute's "About Me" page here on Doomworld:

Quote

I joined TeamTNT in 1998, where Ty Halderman (RIP) took my Ultimate Invasion project under the TeamTNT umbrella.  A couple years later it was abandon (it was too big and I lost interest, and to be honest I didn't know how to manage the team I had brought together to do it).

Paul started posting here again not too long ago as @Kor so it's possible that he still has the resources around somewhere.

Psychophobia - Episode 3: the Psychophobia mod is clearly an enhanced remake of both the Bloodpack & Zbloodpack MegaWADs (both of which aren't to be confused with the ZBlood project). Out of the original levels of the original Bloodpack/ZBloodpack remade for Psychophobia, only two episodes were ever released with the third one only having a demo ever released.

Yes, I still have Ultimate Invasion's levels and textures.  However, UI was too big; 99 levels.  68 were going to be revamped Invasion 1 and 2 levels and then my team would be doing the remaining 31 new levels.  But I lost interest and couldn't keep the project together.

I briefly revived the project a couple times and asked NiGHTMARE for help, but quickly realized I was too busy.  But he said yes, and I didn't feel right having him help with a project that was unlikely to be finished.  So I immediately canceled it.

If I can maintain interest in mapping, my plan is to do a new version of Invasion 1 and 2 using Otex when Vengeance 2 is finished (I decided to take Invasion's stuff out of V2 because it simply made the project too big and didn't belong there anyway).

So no, UI will never be finished.  But I don't have any of the 31 new levels that were intended to be in the project.  As far as I know none were ever done.  And no new enemies or weapons had been finished by the time UI died.  So no one's missing anything if I stick to my plans for Invasion 1 and 2.

EDIT: I think I had a volcano lab level planned for the final levels of UI (which would take place on Mars). Nick Baker did some work on something for that, I think. It was all so long ago.

The lost mega-project that stuck in my mind is ZD3K: The Conspiracy.

zd3k.png.03223ebd4b26872fdb5252e9f47b6c4a.png

The project was started in 2003/2004, and even back then purported to have over 50 levels, with all kinds of custom features and even a custom engine based on ZDoom. It promised the moon, and in mid-2004 was supposedly 95% complete. Yet the author (who confusingly had the username X-Doom) never delivered, but continuously reappeared throughout the 2000s and the 2010s. He seems to have restarted the project multiple times, with his last post being made in 2018 where he announced that he became a father.

The project used to have a website as well, which existed as far back as 2004, but the domain was recently hogged by some Chinese shipping company and no archive was ever made. As a result, all screenshots in the respective ZDoom threads were lost, save a few that were uploaded to the ZDoom wiki:

Zd3k0001.png

Zd3k0004.png

I don't think the project was ever released in any form, despite supposedly being close to completion for so long.

It reminds me Half Life with those screenshots. With over 50 levels it sounds like it was quite the overly ambitious project.

Dark Plutonia by death-destiny. Had screenshots of all 32 maps. Sadly i don't think this one will ever surface.

I remember looking forward to that wad, didn't knew there were screenshots of all the maps (or that he even made them).

There was a demo released of only 1 map (Satan's Angel) , and remains the only playable thing of the wad.

The Infestation: The Town Infection Prequel - a planned prequel to the GZDoom mod Town Infection by @CoTeCiO.

Two videos showing two of the maps, but that's pretty much it. The author abandoned the mod when he entered university at the time. And that's a shame cause the mod could've been cool.

Oh hi there!

Yeah! Unfortunately once I entered university, it was impossible for me to find time to work on it. I had a whole design document for it (a la Doom bible) and some work done in some maps, none of them finished (except for a couple of boss maps). I've been thinking on reviving the project as a community thing and get people to make the remaining maps while I finish the soundtrack and I polish the design stuff so there's more guidance for the people who decide to participate, but I haven't really gotten around getting that started. I feel The Infestation would've been a far better mod than Town Infection was, I had a lot more experience and I had some pretty awesome ideas for it, it was just too ambitious for one person with very little time available. Thanks for the interest though!!

I also spoke about it in more detail on this video, at the 10:13 minute mark. That video also has the design document linked. So yeah, with all of that stuff being available, I'm not sure if the mod is "lost" per se, the files are still around and I am still around too, heh!

Also, about the link being private, blame Google for it, they changed the settings for all my links because they expired or something like that. I do get emails when people try to download them and I grant them permission to everybody! So yeah, if any of you want to take a look at what I got to work on before I had to drop the project, it's all there! Again, thanks for the interest! It's mindblowing that over 10 years after that got canned, people still talk about it!

Speaking of actual lost WADs, there was this dude, his name was Jack. He was working on a sequel to Town Infection. I don't think he got very far with it beyond some concepts and incomplete maps. I think I might have the WAD he sent me back then somewhere...

I don't know if this is of any help, but this is the best I can find. At the very least Paul has talked about Ultimate Invasion's history and its fate.

Invasion II

It's quite interesting how in the megawad, Rick Lipsey contributed to Invasion II. Two of the maps seem to be the ones that are yet to be found and uploaded on the idgames archive (Tangent to Reality and Talon), while Map 19 is basically a modified version of Polygon Base.

Here's a link to Invasion's TeamTNT webpage from 1998.  At some point the project was pulled out of TeamTNT, though I don't remember exactly when that was.  And at one point the team had more members than mentioned here.  Skillsaw being one of them.  A mistake I made 24 year ago, still my apologies for leaving them out.

Scythe X episodes 3, 4, 5 & 6 (and maybe even the secret levels): Erik Alm's planned final installment of the Scythe series, with only two episodes ever released. I guess Erik Alm lost interest in completing the last four episodes of this PWAD. What a shame, as this could've been an epic conclusion to the Scythe series.

Those don't really qualify as ''lost'' because they probably were never even made in the first place, sadly. Erik pretty much just released what he had and we don't know if he ever made anything else, which is probably unlikely.

I reckon enough was enough for him. Ran out of ideas or had other events going on in life.

There was a version of Rick's Tangent to Reality that I got from somewhere, though I don't remember where.  It was quite different looking; using the Brown textures a lot.  As for Talon, I got that off of AOL's download area.  It looks pretty much as the original version did.  In fact I asked him if I could use the textures from it and he responded with an offer to contribute his maps.

That's very curious, cause I'm hoping someone can be able to find a upload the original Tangent to Reality and Talon into the idgames archive as the only maps by Rick Lipsey currently available are Polygon Base and The Final Geometry.

Also, while I was checking the stuff surrounding the Invasion series, I came across some more fascinating things that were "behind the scenes."

"As for the music, it's by Mark Klem. I had asked him to do music for I2 in summer of '97."

http://web.archive.org/web/19990128202655/http://members.aol.com/Moe541/invasion.html

I thought I'd bring that up, because having played Invasion 2, I noticed how some of Mark Klem's tracks came from other places. Map 06's was obviously "Anchor" from Memento Mori 2, Map 07 and Map 10 were "Danger" and "Phenomenon" from STRAIN respectively, though the former sounded more like an early version of the track, and Map 08 and 09 were "Bassline" and "Retribute" All Hell Breaks Loose. Map 01, 03, 04, 05, 13 and 14's tracks sound like early versions of some of his tracks from Gothic 2, but Map 02 seems to be the only track that isn't from other wads. Was it an original track Mark composed for the megawad? As for the music for Map 25 and 29, I could tell they're not by Mark Klem as Map 29 is a midi rendition of Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole," though I don't know what is Map 25's track.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure I don't have the original versions on my hard drive anymore.

I'm aware the map06 tune is from MM2.  the music of Map25 came from Lipsey's original Talon wad.  Where he got it, I don't know.  As for Map29 I don't remember where I got that.  I asked Mark to compose map02's music specifically for map02s setting.

As for the rest, that's what Mark sent me.  I heard after GothicDM 2's release that he got some of his files mixed up.  The music from Strain I didn't realize was from Strain as I hadn't played much of it.  And I've never played All Hell Breaks Loose.  So I thought he had sent me all new music.

Anyone remember "RTC-3057: Blue"?  It was one of the first hub maps in a blue space ship.  Had some really sweet level design, unfortunately we only ever saw the first hub.

A note on the Harris maps mentioned earlier:

  Reveal hidden contents

I am pretty sure some of the lost maps were only available by contacting him through email, and the authorities quickly shut all his sites and emails down after the shooting so whatever was salvaged right after the shooting that appears on acolumbinesite is likely all that is left that will see public release.

The rumor he made maps or mods of his school is just an urban legend. There is no actual evidence of such a thing existing.

Regarding that rumored Harris level of his school, either the supposed Doom WAD never existed, or Harris was planning to make that supposed rumored level for Duke Nukem 3D or Quake 1 & 2, but likely either never bothered to do so or ever even completed/finished them.

Doom 2.9: a GZDoom (and maybe even ZDoom) mod that was being developed by DanMiniGuN. At least two videos were released by him, one being the premier trailer and the other being the demonstration of the weapons.

I don't think this mod got released in any form whatsoever. On a side note, this mod during development was called Doom 2.5 (not to be confused with the other Doom 2.5 project that aimed to recreate Doom 3 in ZDoom/GZDoom) which the author released videos of the first eleven levels being played in the Doomsday Engine.

As far as I know, that earlier version of Doom 2.9 never came to fruition either, and it's levels would've been redesigned for the GZDoom version before the mod was subsequently abandoned.

A couple of TeamTNT's cancelled in the late 1990s. I think nobody mentioned them here.

They were as follows:

Doom Revisited - 32-level solo-play level pack attempting to recreate the feel of the original Doom/Doom2 series.

Eternally New - a 32-level multiplayer Doom DM run through the Eternal Shell focusing on cooperative play.

PuzzleWorld - a solo-play level pack focusing on puzzles.

Ragnarok: The Search For Aasgard and Ragnarok DM - both were total conversions which were awaiting the development of the Open Gaming Resource Engine (OGRE).

Open Gaming Resource Engine (OGRE) - a source merger project between BOOM, WinDoom, and DOSDoom among others. Note: this is not related to the non-TeamTNT OGRE Engine.

An additional 25 maps for Eternal Doom IV to convert it into a megawad.

Just wanted to mention these here if anyone hasn't yet.

Christen David Klie's Subderma map. It was probably a either a Doom or Doom II wad that was made in the mid-1990s that was never released in any form as Chris Klie (@Mapslinger) was hired at LucasArts to focus on game development probably until 2013 when Disney disbanded the in-house development team.

I wonder if anyone here can get in contact with Chris Klie to see of he still has the Subderma map somewhere on a floppy disk or CD-R backup and if he was among the few people to leave LucasArts when Disney disbanded the in-house development team. Time Will Be.

Betray.wad - well at least the original 1995 unaltered standalone release of MAP33 Betray from the original Xbox version of Doom II included in the ports of Doom 3 Limited Collector's Edition and Resurrection of Evil. There is no evidence of this map ever having an official standalone prior to 2005, as no official source prior to 2005 has ever been found in any form.
