Sorry to respond to an older comment, but I came back to this thread to see if there's been any boom in MyHouse copycats. An influx of experimental maps would indeed be cool but I think what people are worried about is an influx of inferior MyHouse clones. MyHouse draws very heavily on what's been popular in internet horror for the past couple of years and I think that's also why it managed to blow up outside of the Doom community. Unfortunately there's also a lot of oversaturation going on in internet horror. For example, since Kane Pixels' Backrooms shorts, YouTube has been flooded with subpar copycat videos. Same happened in the "analog horror" genre: there tons of poorly made videos all copying eachother.

I was curious to see if the same was going to happen with MyHouse. I imagine making a MyHouse-style doom wad is more difficult and therefore a lot less accesible than making a Backrooms scene in Blender or making some shitty "Mandela Catalogue" knockoff by animating a jpeg and slapping a VHS filter on it. I could be wrong but so far there doesn't seem to be a flood of 2nd rate MyHouse clones?

No, I haven't seen any knockoffs here on Doomworld. There have been several other house mystery maps released this year, but they're all doing their own thing (one's a walking simulator with dialogue, one's a point-and-click adventure game, one's got more of a childhood imagination/nightmares angle and I didn't see any backrooms stuff in it), and at least some of them were apparently in development before MyHouse was released. There have been a lot of maps with some similar types of horror elements, but that has been true in the Doom modding scene for a while (for instance, the Wormwood mapsets have drawn on backrooms-type horror and the idea of being trapped in liminal spaces since the series began several years ago, and the Hell maps of Doom 2 basically used liminal, surreal spaces for light horror back in 1994).

I know very little about the analog horror genre, so I can't really speak on that.

People taking inspiration from other maps is normal in the doom community, and generally isn't frowned upon at all. Just look at how many projects out there are being made in the style of plutonia, or tnt, or scythe. The point I was trying to make is that even if there was a flood of maps like myhouse, there would be nothing wrong with that. It doen't matter whether they're inferior, as long as the mappers have put some actual effort and care into it and not just blatantly plagarized the source of inspiration (which would get them banned here anyways), then the maps would be worth having here.

And my first point still stands. I haven't seen a single copycat; just plenty of people worrying about copycats.

If anyone pops up whining about copycats it's a safe bet they're "Guy who has only played myhouse.pk3, playing his second experimental wad: 'Getting a lot of "myhouse.pk3" vibes from this...'"

Reminds me too of all the people on the internet who have never heard metal before saying whenever they come across a new song that it is "Doom-inspired" or that "Mick Gordon helped with composing it", even if it is the most radically different type of stuff compared to nu-Doom's soundtrack.

Oh the analog horror comment was just to illustrate how quickly new ideas in internet horror become derivative and diluted through oversaturation. Same with the Backrooms/Kane Pixels example. The concept of the Backrooms has been around for a while but it really blew up after the Kane Pixels video. After that happened a lot of people started making their own Backrooms videos in Blender because it's relatively easy to do. But a lot of those videos are also very low quality and miss what made the original Backrooms concept or the Kane Pixels video interesting.

I was curious if that kind of thing would happen in the wake of MyHouse as well. When it exploded in popularity I remember seeing posts from people who admitted they had never even played Doom before but were suddenly inspired by MyHouse to start making their own wads and I wonder how many of those people stuck around.

The handwringing about copycats is so weird because one of the core aspects to this wad is that it is a play on a previously existing and very popular trend.  There have been people making creepy Doom wads of their own houses for decades! And even after the twist happens, the wad takes you into liminal spaces and backrooms, both concepts that already existed and have had countless fan-driven expansions, additions, and “copycats.” It makes explicit mention of a number of its own inspirations.

All art is in some way inspired by what came before.  All art inspires what comes after.  Insisting that something must exist in a vacuum is unrealistic.

Oh yes definitely, it borrows very heavily from existing stuff, but it also really takes advantage of being a Doom wad. It's not like Vedge wanted to build a backrooms game and chose to do it as a Doom wad, but it plays a lot with the history and expectations of Doom wads. The popular internet horror trends it relies are what helped it gain such a big audience outside of Doom and I wonder how many of those people have stuck around and are trying to make their own wads, without perhaps completely understanding the Doom-context in which it exists.
Anyway I'm not really trying to argue anything here. As I said, my posts are mostly out of curiosity. I'm fascinated by how these internet horror trends evolve and now Doom has been caught up in it too in a way.

Getting déjà vu to the whole Metroidvania situation, where people think that Hollow Knight is the only original one, and everything else are HK rip-off!

I was actually hoping to see maps inspired by this. I would expect there to be many inferior ones, but hoping to see one or two being truly innovating.

I dunno about inspired necessarily but.....

End Times

Data Corruption

Normal Underhalls

There are a couple of others that I think sort of play off of GZDoom's advanced reality-bending capabilities in horrific ways but I don't remember the names right now and can't really look them up now.

This is my first post, and I thought it would be apt to do it here, as myhouse.wad brought me back to Doom 27 years later.

I was just a runt when Doom released, and to say it consumed my childhood would be an understatement. For some 3 years I played Dooms 1 and 2 ad nauseum, and could have probably recreated both games pretty reasonably from memory. By the time Final Doom released though, I was squarely onboard the Quake hype train, and never looked back.

That is, until myhouse.wad exploded on the internet, and I found myself downloading GZDoom. I think everything that could be said about this wad has already been said, so after I finished it I was eager to explore more immersive Doom experiences, and by someone's recommendation in this thread I downloaded Grove (which I liked a lot), and then Eviternity. The latter kicked my ass so hard, I felt compelled to go back and uv-max all IWADs from scratch.

Fast-forward a few months, I have now beaten Doom 1 (and ep 4, which I hadn't played as a kid), Doom 2, TNT, Plutonia and SIGIL, and am now working my way up xvertigox's WAD progression list, currently having a blast with Base Ganymede. I spent the last 6 months playing nothing but Doom, falling in love with it all over again, and with so many WADs to play I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. Just to take a quick break I fired up Borderlands yesterday, and was baffled by how slow and clunky it felt. It's like a veil has been lifted, and I can see how much was lost in the past few decades.

Anyway, I imagine the myhouse hype has died long ago, but I'll always be grateful for it bringing me back to my roots.

Yeah, it's always great to hear from other people!

I saw it mentioned in this thread that Mutahar (SomeOrdinaryGamers) made a video. Here is his video, with heavy spoilers. This is totally different from the usual gameplay videos and his investigative journalist style comes through.

EDIT: Stumbled upon the video by accident.

I started following mutahar back in 2012-2013 when he was still doing Game CreepyPasta stories. This video was such a nostalgia trip.

Spent the whole day playing this. couldnt stop. loved every second of it. real labor of love this was. thank you for releasing this to the world.

The fact that the map came with a whole googledrive detective rabbit hole 👏 👏 👏

Got pretty emotional at the true ending. Great message.

Never thought a doom mod would stick with me so much after playing.
