There's a game called Barony that's a swell dungeon crawler! It's pretty fun.

You could pick up Cave Story, it's an old indie game from 2004-ish that i'm sure can run on a potato pc.

You could pick up the original free version on the Cave Story Tribute Site or get the newer Cave Story+ on Steam for a cheep price.

And, not to be a goober, but: There is the ENTIRE UNIVERSE of Abandonware sites....... with ancient DOS games on them. I finally made friends with DOSBox and it also has a cool front-end (DeFend Re-loaded).........

Have you tried Dusk? The minimum RAM requirement is 2GB, and the minimum graphics card is a GT9800, which is a 512MB graphics card, and those cards areĀ going for fifteen dollars on Ebay right now.Ā

Ā

And it's a really, really good game. You might not be able to play the HD version without slowdown, but I'm pretty sure you could play the original version just fine.

Ā

Also: Post system specs. Saying you have a shitty graphics card doesn't really help.Ā

Seconding both of these.

Dusk got me back into PC gaming when I had a potato PC and it gave me a distorted view on what I could actually run.

But definitely post your specs, along with what type of games you like. You gotta help us help you, OP.

Ā

And while we're waiting, I have to ask...

What does a side hustle look like for an esteemed gentleman such as yourself, Grungo? What type of opportunities were around in the Paleolithic era for budding entrepreneurs?

Might help to elaborate on what sorts of games you like. I'm sure Cats Organized Neatly would run on just about anything, but I don't know if you'd be interested in it at all.

I loved that game šŸ˜ŗ

Gaming is hard when you have a bad pc. I do, and I find that getting one game that you can play for a long time is way easier than trying to play many games.

Terraria is long and replayable (and addictive), with low enough settings I'd be surprised if you still can't run it reasonably well. I sunk an ungodly amount of time into Nuclear throne grinding highscores. Online chess may suck you in but it's not for everyone obviously. Geometry dash has essentially endless content with the custom levels. A not very popular niche is the traditional roguelikes rabbit hole, again not for everyone but brogue (it's free) is a good way to get into them.

For "single experience" games that are meant to be played once or a few times without massive replayability consider speedrunning to get more out of them if you liked the game enough. A few of them: Cave story (free), hotline miami 1&2, katana zero (short but very fun to speedrun, has a built in speedrun mode), chrono trigger, deadbolt, gunpoint.

I'd never heard this term before..

Ā

So I'll leave this link here for anyone else who might've been as clueless as me:

Potato PC

Ā

I always assumed it was a reference to the science experiment of using a potato to illuminate a light bulb. But apparently it's referring to Oblivion, and damn I'm old.

I never knew the term "Potato PC" was something that came from Oblivion. I'm shocked that there's anyone who hasn't heard the term though. I think I've encountered it on a very regular basis for what seems like a decade.

If someone wants to do more research on the etymology of it than Generic Gaming Site I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but that 100% sounds like some urbandictionary-tier shit they pulled out of their arse.

It really does. I think most people have the same understanding of the term as @Jello: that it's referring to the fact that your PC is so weak it might as well be a potato, since everyone has at least heard about using potatoes for power.

What about your graphics card? Nvidia? AMD? Anything?
