GZDoom HUD Safe Zone

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So is there any way to define a safe zone for HUDs so they aren't always drawn in the absolute edges of the screen? I've got an ultrawide monitor and while it's nice to have additional peripheral vision in first person games, I would honestly prefer not having to completely shift my eyes away from the action to see what my health or ammo or whatever is because the fullscreen HUD insists on being stuck in the corner of the screen.

e: I just realized that Supplice has exactly this feature under the name "HUD offset", which only begs the question even more of why this isn't a feature in GZDoom proper.

Probably because most people aren't on ultrawide monitors.

Fixing it would be up to the individual ports.

I get the feeling that, with gzdoom being that moddable, people adopted the "you can do this with a mod" mantra and learned to live with it.

There's probably a lot other instances of useful features implemented firstly in a mod but never proposed for inclusion in the main engine.

back in topic: I love how crispy and woof give users the choice of displaying the hud as on a 4:3 screen

I also tried to implement something similar in my gzdoom huds, but doing that in sbarinfo is cumbersome - I need to start learning zscript and port them over (leaving zdoom/zandronum compatibility behind).

Yeah I looked it up on the Zdoom wiki and it seems like it might be relatively easy to do with a couple lines of code if I knew what lines of code needed to go where.

But on the other hand, nobody seems to have done this sort of standalone "scale the hud to an arbitrary screen width" mod before (that I can find) so I dunno if it's really even as easy as it's made out to be.
