What is the DWmegawad Club?

This is a place where we settle down, have a cup of tea (or drink of your choice) and take a month to play through a megawad on our own, together! Any keen observations, criticisms, or frustrated ranting about it goes here in the discussion. As long as you want to say something about what you've played, feel free to speak your mind.

Can I join?

Sure. The only rule is that you have to play at least some of the levels in our monthly megawad to contribute, but you're generally encouraged to finish the whole thing, even if you've played it before.

What levels am I allowed to post about?

Whatever day of the month it is, is the upper limit for the map you can post on. So if it’s the 6th, you may discuss up to MAP06.

Do I have to post an entry every day?

Nope, not at all. This is only for our more enthusiastic members. As long as you play through it with us you’re part of the club.

When do we vote on the next month’s megawad?

Voting begins on the 25th of the current month. Remember to add one “+++” before your vote to make it easier to count. For example:

+++ Ultimate Doom

Note that you can vote for up to three separate nominations in a single month, and every wad must contain at least three maps each. The winning nomination must receive at least four votes for a thread to be made. Ties will be decided by RNG.

Oh would you look at that? A sequel to Eviternity came out a little over a month ago, cooked up by the king of sexy sectors himself: Dragonfly! Let’s give it a spin and see if this sophomore outing is as good as the first, shall we?

Remember that this project is MBF21-compatible—make sure your DSDA & GZDoom ports are updated! All secret maps will be played & reviewed on the days they’re encountered (denoted by italics below), so plan accordingly.

ICID, what the hell is this now?

Endless Random /idgames WAD Adventures is a small project of exploration, interaction, entertainment and reviews where we meet once every two weeks to select random WADs in search of hidden treasures, lost promises, or our worst nightmares! We use the /idgames archive’s special feature that lets us search for random files. Of course, sometimes the results are resources or unplayable stuff, so we focus on looking for WADs.

So, what do we do here?

  1. Play at least one random WAD in a two-week period of time. WADs are selected using the Random File feature on /idgames or from the list below.
  2. Post a review of whatever you play.
  3. Always provide the name of the WAD, the name of the author, and a link to the file.
  4. Play however you want, on any skill level, and with any source port, as long as you play the WAD as intended/in working shape.
  5. Be respectful. It's okay to criticize a map, but remember that many mappers read these review threads and behave accordingly. Also, please don't tag mappers into a negative review of their work.

What kind of WADs are we looking for?

Any file on /idgames is fair game, but most of us choose to stick to singleplayer Doom or Heretic WADs that work in our sourceport(s) of choice. If you're worried about finding Terrywads or broken files, I also pull at least five random WADs for the event. Feel free to play them with me if you wish, or look for your own! The point of the event is to encourage you to explore this vast, random world.

Recommendations for reviewing:

Spoiler

1. Please take screenshots or video of your adventures.

2. Commenting the source port and difficulty level is not required, but provides helpful context to your review.

3. Try to stick to no more than 1 WAD per day to avoid burnout, but this part’s all up to you, champ!

4. Reviews of all formats are valid. Both longform and shortform are good as long as you write with integrity.

What were your very first mapping attempts like?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142852-what-were-your-very-first-mapping-attempts-like/ Let's talk myhouse, myschool, mygarage, mydedust2recreation and stuff. Your very first, probably unreleased and lost to time, mapping attempts. What did you try to make, and how embarassing were the results? And how much time has passed between your first mapping attempt and your first released map?

While my first released maps date to 2016, my first mapping attempts date back to 2012 at least. I remember them vaguely, but I think my first map was actually a cave. I found some map on the Internet and tried to make a level based on it in the style of a cavern. I worked on it quite a bit, but of course it was abandoned and lost. All of my early map attempts were lost due to me changing PCs and not backing up stuff.

I remember how when in early 2013 I learned about Slade, I of course tried to put commercial music in my maps, usually completely unfitting to the tone of my maps.

Anyway, most of my early attempts were me trying to recreate some level from some other game. Actually, this hasn't changed much since then: a lot of rooms/areas in my released maps were usually based on something I've seen in other games, I just implement them differently enough that it's not noticeable. I rarely have entirely original ideas, heh.

Cacowards 2024 Mentionation Threadhttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142479-cacowards-2024-mentionation-thread/ Hello all! As we head out into the uncertain but exciting future of 2024, we are once again asking for your input on the various cool WADs that will come out (and have already come out!) that we on the Cacowards team might want to check out. This includes anything that'll release in the coming months but also stuff released from mid-November 2023 onwards. There's many great things being worked on Doomworld and beyond, and we can't wait to see what's getting cooked up in everyone's Doom Builders and Slades.

Now just before I pass on the mic to you, there's a couple things to keep in mind:

1) Please do not nominate your own projects.

2) Beyond just providing the name of the project, it would also be helpful if you (very briefly) explained what it is, who made it, and also provided a link to it.

3) The mentionation thread is not merely for single maps, levelpacks and megawads, but also works for other things such as gameplay mods, music packs, texture packs, promising newcomer... if you feel like we should have a look at it, post away!

4) Yes, we are aware of Eviternity 2 and Sigil 2 and a couple other high profile projects, so you don't need to nominate these two and other extremely well known projects that will, undoubtedly, be on our radars already.

5) Please mention projects that are actually released or finished in some form, doesn't matter if they are only available as "episode 1" or "RC1" so long as there is something available to download and play.

Onwards to another great year! Of course, if you're new or you missed the 2023 Cacowards, you can read them here.

The Official 'Trying to Find a Specific WAD' Threadhttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/60282-the-official-trying-to-find-a-specific-wad-thread/mod edit: This is the thread to ask about specific pwads that you remember (e.g. you played them years ago or have heard/seen information about them) but can't locate. Maybe you can't remember the name, or searching based on what you remember has not proved successful. Give us much specific information as you can to help identify the wad, and maybe someone will be able to assist you.

Do not use this thread to ask for warez, or wads that can't legally be distributed.

Do not make general requests for certain types of maps (e.g. a map with lots of cyberdemons). These should be made in other threads and will be removed from this one.

Now back to the original post:
------------------------------------------------------------

Do you people know where this custom doom map can be found. I seem to have played it 3 or 4 years ago but I can't remember what it's name was. I think I have lost the file ages ago. But I do remember some parts of the map. This is what the map included:
- I think the story was about an experiment that went wrong.
- It involves major laboratory scenes as well as some outdoor too.
- It included totally different monster/weapon sprites.
- The player started (I think) inside a garage-like room then into an open yard.
- There was at some points a 3D-model Imp with no animations apart from trying to attack the player, and a 3D-model guy (I think he was red). It will explode when he touches the player.
- The sky was clear blue.
- The mod was for ZDoom.
- This also involved major ZDoom features like 3d-floors and slopes.

Could you please identify this zdoom maps because it's almost impossible for me to find one on the Internet without knowing it's name! Thanks!

Forgot the name of this old zdoom wad serieshttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142876-forgot-the-name-of-this-old-zdoom-wad-series/ I remember this wad but forgot it's name but remember it

it was part of a series, with story, and I played a random sequel where it started on this space station, and like in the beginning level, the player went into this mainframe and there was a script where it looked like you went inside cyberspace

it also had storytext and I think doomguy was the protagonist

this wad was about late 2000s or early 2010s

if anyone remembers this can you let me know? I found it once on idgames but I must've deleted it one time

What are some WADs that deserve a new MIDI Pack?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/126659-what-are-some-wads-that-deserve-a-new-midi-pack/ In light of the fact that Alien Vendetta has a brand new MIDI pack and there's also a TNT and Plutonia MIDI Pack, .MID the Way id Did, and a Revolution! MIDI Pack, it'd be cool to see if there are any WADs that could get a MIDI makeover.

I personally think that Scythe 1 could get some new MIDIs. What are some famous WADs you think could a makeover as well?

Known lost WADs of our history?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/128173-known-lost-wads-of-our-history/ Hey everyone. I've been recently scouring through some of the shovelware discs of yore, and I've found myself discovering some highly obscure WADs that aren't even part of the /idgames archive. Granted, most of them are absolute trash but I still find it curious how there's actually a considerable amount of content out there that's very hard or near impossible to access.

So that got me thinking, what are some ''lost WADs'' that we know of ? By this I mean:

  • A WAD that we have some proof that, at some point in time, existed in someones PC. Either screenshots, threads, .txt mentions or incomplete alpha versions.
  • It's currently unavailable for download and there's no traces or files to be found in the internet.

I'm trying to create a list of such enigmatic WADs. Some of these have an urban-legend like status. I personally know of:

WADs with visual proof:

Waters of Lethe by Dr. Sleep. Supposedly the last WAD in the Cantos series, and with a building time of around 7 years but never saw the light of day, sadly.

51246595_310174829850349_4269189052613263360_n.jpg.d1b9f9e06fe4b311089aae857e5aa614.jpg

The original Chiron by Dr. Sleep. Initially, it was E4M7: And Hell Followed. Was part of the Inferno series, and was known as Chiron, but Dr. Sleep got to work for the id guys and Chiron was replaced, so we can only wonder if this Chiron WAD was either a whole level, or perhaps a more primitive version of E4M7.

E4m7_intersect.PNG

This particular area looks a lot like the one from MAP03: Virgil's Lead (Master Levels) so maybe they were both born out of Chiron?

Masterlev-virgil-start.png

Joe Anderson WADs, found this one thanks to a thread that pointed how all of his WADs started being removed from the archives suddenly. Even trying to look up the author's name is hard. Some of the WADs did exist and where even reviewed on the ONEMANDOOM Blogpost. There's still some randomly preserved zip files, but I couldn't find more info as to why the sudden disappearance of the WADs and how many there actually are.

NSFW:

The Harris Levels

This is one is quite controversial but I guess it still counts as ''lost WADs''. There's actually a number of WADs that can still be found on the internet, but some WADs are still lost, either because they were never uploaded or perhaps were purged. These WADs are mentioned on the ENDOOM screen of uaclabs.WAD, the WADs are:

coolname

techout

techout.gif

outdoors

assault

thrasher

thrasher.gif

realdeth

tier (supposedly a 7-level episode)

realdoom

realdeth.gif

And yes, there's mention of a supposedly ''school level''. From my research, this is most likely just a legend, as none of the actual known WADs resemble a real school and there's no actual reference of a school on the .txt files.

Alien Vindicta by @Andy Johnsen . Early 90s version of Alien Vendetta. Full 32-level megawad that never saw the light of day!

The WIP - WADs in Progress website is probably full of lost WADs, so that's also a good place to search for, well, nothing I guess, other than vapor memories. Here's some of the WADs I couldn't find in any other place. While the website is preserved in the internet archive, the details and comments were lost.

Hellstorm: Dark Ascension, was one of these very ambitious partial conversions from the late nineties.

ZD3K: The Conspiracy, The project was started in 2003/2004, and even back then purported to have over 50 levels, with all kinds of custom features and even a custom engine based on ZDoom. It promised the moon, and in mid-2004 was supposedly 95% complete.

The Shores of ZDoom, the supposed sequel to Knee-Deep in ZDoom.

Kama Sutra 2, the sequel to the iconic megawad, it had 10 completed maps out of 32, but was never finished nor released.

Deimos: Anomaly Unleashed, by Christopher Lutz. It seems at least one level was finished, but the project never came to be.

The Last Adventure, Here's a WAD called The Last Adventure. The homepage for this http://www.doommaster.prv.pl/ is one site I found, still cached by google but currently offline) was around a few years ago, and even had a download link available.

Insomnia, a sequel to Cyberdreams, a celebrated and influential early puzzle wad, was in the works for a few years but never released.

Other lost WADs:

BEYOND - it's mentioned in description of another wad by it's author. I can't find BEYOND anywhere.

Vile-Lab - mentioned in the KILL!Zone II .TXT but which I wasn't able to track down.

DK.ZIP - Fortress level by Malcolm Sailor. Could be CHORD2.

Compuserve files - Bob Evans teased having a backup of a bunch of Compuserve files around the time that he uploaded his holy grail ODESSA maps.

4play4.wad - is mentioned by the 90s author Harq - in many of his readmes, going back to '97.

Doom Resurrection - an early ZDoom megawad, started around March/April 1998.

Doom Episode 5 - started somewhere around September 1999, and died a death in September 2001 It looks like only 1 complete map was ever made for this, by Martin Schultz.

Perfect - started around March 1999 as a project loosely inspired by the Darkening, and later morphed into an unofficial Darkening Episode 3 when Ola Bjorling joined the team to provide a brand new texture .wad

Ultimate Invasion - total conversion by Paul "Moe" Fleschute under TeamTNT umbrella.

Vile-Lab - Don Howard of Kill! Zone and Daedalus: Alien Defence fame released a single level Doom II level called Vile-Lab, mentioned in the KILL!Zone II

The Deathmatch '95/UK Tournament WADs - Two of the PWADs mentioned on the DoomWiki's page, those are SEMFINAL.WAD and SEATLLE.WAD.

Oneway2.wad and tun1.wad - Two other wads by Degrees Centigrade are still lost: Oneway2.wad and tun1.wad .

What other lost WADs do you guys know? Perhaps we can tagged them here, and maybe even find them (the archivists at The Official 'Trying to Find a Specific WAD' Thread are gods at this!) but, even if the files themselves are never to be found, at least this gallery can work as a wall of solace to those lost.

IronEagle Competition 62: ADoomhttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142549-ironeagle-competition-62-adoom/ Welcome to another new year (2024, where has time gone?) of ironmanning! Here we have the latest installment of the IronEagle competition, the ironman challenge that welcome everyone who plays Doom, from the new youngster that just installed Doom to the grizzled veteran that's been playing since December 1993 and everyone in between. As long as you enjoy playing Doom, and are willing to give it a try continuously and without saves, then feel free to join us!

This month, participants will challenge themselves against ADoom, a limit-removing 9-map episode replacement for Doom, released by Adam F. Smith in 2019. (No, we're not playing an Amiga port of Doom, wiki aficionados.) This episode begins at Observation Post Romero, which was built shortly after the discovery of some sort of green marble "temple." Unfortunately for the inhabitants of Observation Post Romero, demons emerged and killed everyone (as tends to happen in such events). Now you have been sent to find a way into the "temple" and to stop the demonic invasion at its source in Hell.

Participants must play these maps on complevel 3 or Doom(strict).

Download ADoom (version 1.1) here.

ADoom starts at E3M1. Survival is reaching and clearing the metal room with the exit switch (the room beyond the three key pillars) in E3M7. (It is impossible to complete E3M7 due to the ending platform being surrounded by impassable linedefs. There is one secret map, which is reached from E3M6, as usual. The secret map is not mandatory.

Enjoy!

  • Template for PRBoom+:
    • -iwad doom.wad -file adoomv11.wad -complevel 3 -skill <x> -warp 3 1 -record <IEadoom>

  • Template for ZDoom:
    • -iwad doom.wad -file adoomv11.wad +compatmode 3 -skill <x> +map e3m1 -record <IEadoom>
      • it is possible you may have to use +set skill <x> for GZDoom

  • <x> must be replaced by the skill level. 2 = HNTR, 3 = HMP, 4 = UV
  • <IEadoom> would be replaced with whatever you decide to call your demo, if you're submitting a demo

Rules:

The rules are basically the same as they have been. Either demos or streams are permissible. If you are creating a demo, post the demo. If you are streaming, post a video of the stream. Even if streaming, you can still submit a demo, if you want to.

The basic rule is that you submit a demo/stream played at a particular difficulty level (HNTR, HMP, or UV) and you play without saving and reloading, ending your run when you die (or survive).

The following are allowed (but not required):

  • Freelook
  • Crosshair
  • Mods that are COSMETIC ONLY

The following are NOT allowed:

  • Crouching
  • Jumping
  • Mods that change ANY aspect of base gameplay, including (but not limited to) enemy behavior, enemy speed, player abilities, player speed, weapon damage, ammo, and enemy drops.

Further, more specific, rules are listed below:

Spoiler

  • Submissions (except for streams, as described below) must include a demo.
    • You may practice a mapset if you want, but these practice runs should not be submitted as your official entry, and your run would be Category 2, unless there are exceptional circumstances (such as described below).
  • A run must be done in a singular sitting with no saves. (With room for breaks. This will be addressed below.)
  • Streams and video runs are accepted provided you post a video of the stream/run or a link to the video.
    • If you post a video of the stream, you may post a demo if you want, but it is not mandatory. You may also post a demo if you, for some reason, do not want to post the video or a link.
  • Secret levels, if present, do not have to be completed for a survival run. If they are completed, they are extra credit.

Any port is accepted provided it will actually run the mapset. There is no preference.

Spoiler

Of course, if you want to try a limit-removing/Boom map in Chocolate Doom, be my guest. However, be aware that your run may be over rather quickly. Don't say you weren't warned.

  • Category 1: Blind run.
    • This explains itself. You have no knowledge of the wad and have not played/seen it before. I'm willing to be somewhat lenient with this Category.
      • For example, if you die early in Map 01, and then decide to play again for your run, you can still call it Category 1.
  • Category 2: Non-blind.
    • If you have played the wad before and/or possess significant foreknowledge, your run is non-blind. Basically, anything that is not Category 1 is Category 2.

If you're unhappy with your blind run, feel free to record a new run, and submit that run instead. (Just don't submit your first run.) If you want to submit your first run, no matter how you perform, by all means, go ahead and do it. You shouldn't feel that you HAVE to submit a run you're dissatisfied with, just to preserve a "Category 1" status. If you want to go back and submit a second run, you're welcome to do so, but, at this time, it won't be counted.

Difficulty System:

You may submit a demo/stream for only one of HNTR, HMP, or UV. Choose only one, because subsequent submissions will be rejected (i.e., if you submit a HMP demo, the HNTR demo you then submit will be rejected). We're not using the 1CC rule set here. Your first submission is what counts.

Only runs from the same difficulty will be pitted against each other. Each difficulty will be graded separately.

Submission:

When you submit your run, please the include the following information:

  • The category (1 or 2)
  • The difficulty
  • If you survived, your time
  • Whether you completed the secret map
  • If you didn't survive, the map where you died
  • Time of death
  • Kill count upon death
  • Time upon entering your map of death (if you made it past the first map)
  • The port you used (if you included a demo)
  • A link to the stream/video (if you did a stream)

You may include a commentary about the maps or details about them, if you want to. If you do include specific information about the map (e.g., "The demon trap in Map 08 is rough"), please put it in a spoiler, so that people that want a completely blind experience won't be tipped off. If you're just putting in a general comment (e.g., "Pro tip: don't get hit"), then no need for a spoiler.

Attempting to max the maps is not necessary to win.

Ranking for this mapset will be determined by:

  • Survival +1 (with secret map)
  • Time for survival +1
  • Survival (without secret map)
  • Time for survival
  • Map of death (in descending order: E3M7, E3M9, E3M6, E3M5, E3M4, E3M3, E3M2, E3M1)
  • Time it took to reach the map of death
  • Kill count in the map of death

If you die, please wait a few seconds before quitting.

Breaks:

Everyone gets tired. Sometimes people survive longer than they expected. Nature calls. Every now and then, there are family emergencies. Needing to take a break shouldn't necessarily end a promising run. While you should try to complete the run in a single setting, this isn't always possible. If you have to take a break, try to make it quick.

Happy Dooming!

Corridor 7 Reboot for GZDoom ideas.https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142835-corridor-7-reboot-for-gzdoom-ideas/ Hello everyone, You may remember post grungo made on "everything else" about a corridor 7 reboot/remake, well Grungo whipped up some concept art and new ideas...

mostly visualizations of weapons and characters.

FIRST, our protagonist, I wanna make him have a name and a voice like build engine character... I was going with "Mike Corridor" but that is too cheesy, what should his name be and what should his personality be?

image.png.330b1ba976cbf78ce700a57f603dd22c.png

These are weapons I talked about in another thread, this is what they look like

they are based on the original guns in the OG Corridor 7 but re-designed

for example, the minigun is extended and looks actually like a mini gun

the M24 now has a grenade launcher

and the shotgun looks more, Ithaca-y

Also the Plasma Launcher and Disintegrator are now man-made weapons rather than alien in lore but still used by aliens because they stole them.

image.png.3ba8bb97cdc7d2a094e8af7e777f9a28.png

And now we have my new concept: NPC allies, Grungo got them inspired by Half Life Opposing Force's HECU marines

Me also plan zombie mutant variants that attack the player created by the aliens

but so far Me have these 4, the officer which is quick and uses a desert eagle

the gunner which uses the m-343 minigun

the sergeant which uses the shotgun

and the medic which uses a standard m24 and can heal you

there is also a trooper but it's identical to the player and also uses a m24

image.png.93561a1a70b4b161feb9898a44a6774e.png

So... thoughts on this concept? I kinda want to remake Corridor 7 into something... smething more, like a AAA type campaign but good, it'd be like a opposing force but the marines actually win and don't hurt scientists... you also travel to the alien world and the enemies would have new abilities and designs and such

What are your top WADs of all time? Here you can vote for at least 5 of your favorite WADs and you have up to 55 points to allocate any way you wish, with a maximum of 10 points for any particular release. You can change your votes at any time in the future (though, please be sure to make a new post rather than editing an old one). Any commentary on your selections or honorable mentions of other WADs or maps within WADs are always welcome. If you see an error in the list, please let me know!

An example of voting would be:

You don't have to use all 55 points if you don't wish to, as long as you vote for at least 10 WADs.

Secret rule:

Spoiler

You can submit a single (1) point for your work (per mapset), and only if:

  1. You honestly like your work.
  2. Your work is not present in the list at the moment.
  3. Your work has a project page that I can link to (forum post, idgames page, GitHub, etc).

The work is considered your own if you made most of the work for it. So, voting for the community project or a collaboration that you have participated in is not limited by this rule.

Some people may be against allowing voting for your own maps. My motivation is the following. This thread is about personal opinions. An author is also a player, and they can enjoy their own creation as much as they enjoy the others'. There's nothing wrong in liking your work, there's nothing wrong in being proud of it, and there's nothing wrong in expressing that. The 1-point and no-presence limitations are here because the thread is "Community Top", so other people are needed to push an entry to the top.

Longplays By Requests (LBR) -

Intro.

It's about ~ 2 years passed since I've started to writing some short notes / reviews about different wads, not only sticked to Doom I / II, but also Heretic, Hexen and 64. Initially it was just an a sort of part activity of other activities them I'm doing for about past ~ 10 years on well known placement in CIS that stick to old titles in overall.

The topic is gradually growing in length, around 66+ different wads been covered (as well as many other notes been made) by current moment and, after watching for a while some of the decino's, @pagb's and few others videos, as well noticing topics from @Endless (1, 2), @Not Jabba's Not the Cacowards, ONEMANDOOM, I came to idea that, perhaps, I might add a bit of content on the top of it as well in a longplay format. Some of the reviewed one often had no analogues on my native language and, sometimes, if talk about mostly Heretic & Hexen niche, might be not much covered on english as well.

Q. Where to find your reviews on english?

A. Not all of my reviews were translated on english, but few of them are available in the wad topics. Usual format is short and contain short description, pros and contras, as well some useful hints, especially in case how to find secret levels. From the current point I will try to continue to put all of them in this topic.

Q. Walkthrough conditions.

A. Usually I'm using latest version of the GzDoom, always, no matter how hard wad is, UV difficulty, and, sometimes, some additional mods (at first used regularly, recently not so often) - Complex Doom, Heretical Doom, Walpurgis, Corruption Cards. I'm not stick to pistol start, save / load as many as required to not make things tough with no reason, don't care much about 100% everything nowadays, but usually trying to find all secret levels. Basically I'm playing for fun & challenge, not challenge only, so this act as basic aspect for conditions I've set. I'm also going through all the recorded wads for the first time, so basically in most cases there are no "polished" gameplay will be - things are how they might be for the any random, but well experienced player.

Here the current translated list:

1. Quest for Crystal Skulls {2020} {Heretic}

2. TNT: Revilution {2017} {Doom II} {Complex Doom}

3. Plutonia 2 {2008} {The Plutonia Experiment} {Complex Doom}

4. Going Down {2014} {Doom II} {Complex Doom}

6. Doom Zero {2019} {Doom II}

7. Valiant: Vaccinated Edition {2015} {Doom II} {Complex Doom}

8. Call of the Apostate {2011} {Heretic} {Heretical Doom}

9.1. Faithless {2019} {Heretic} {Heretical Doom}. Heretic Doom was a bad pick in this specific case due a fact of a low compatibility. Later wad became a part of trilogy that currently remain in the beta stage. So. Planning to back to it later for another try.

11. The Unmaking + The Lost Levels {2021} {64; EX version}

12. Unbeliever {2019} {Heretic} {Heretical Doom}

13. Eviternity {2018} {Doom II}

15. NaNoHexen 2019 {2019} {Hexen} {Walpurgis}

16. No End in Sight {2016 / 2019} {The Ultimate Doom} {Complex Doom}

17. Deathless {2018} {The Ultimate Doom} {Complex Doom}

19. Double Impact {2011} {The Ultimate Doom} {Complex Doom}

20. BTSX EP1 (2012) {Doom II} {Complex Doom}

21. BTSX EP2 (2014) {Doom II} {Complex Doom}

22. Rainy Days In Casablanca {2021} {Doom II}

23. The Wayfarer {2019 / 2020} {Heretic}

24. UAC Ultra {2010} {Doom II}

25. DBP25: Dead, But Dreaming {2020} {Doom II}

26. Fear and Loathing {2020} {Doom II}

Q. Why the theme called "corner of silence"?

A. "Ultra" because of difficulty level. "Silence" because there is enough noise around there nowadays. So in order to somewhat go abstract from it for a bit, not in case of Doom related content as well, my videos contain mostly only pure gameplay without any commentaries, external music, pop-ups and the like type of things.

66. 2022ADO (2022).

Quote

20 years later an unknown signal has been detected from Jigoku, a hellish place from the Proxima Centauri system originally thought to have been defeated. Sounds kinda disturbing, but the hellspawn has been resurrected and you have been sent on a mission to block their path. Upon arrival, you enter the base and fight your way though the dark corridors. As you progress things start to turn nasty, it gets darker, the stench increases and the sweat blisters out of your oily skin. With the earth base and nearby hell cooked, you are teleported to Proxima Centauri D (Jigoku) to finish the job. So grab that gun, lock, load and rip and tear and show those Demons who the boss truly is.

Wad for The Ultimate Doom from @pcorf and company. Consists of 5 episodes with 10 levels each (8 normal and 2 secret). It is the spiritual heir to 2002's A Doom Odyssey, which was released 20 years ago and was included in the Top 100 WADs of All Time list.

For 2022 a rather rare combination of three elements:

1. Most of the modders today prefer Doom II rather anything else. In case of The Ultimate Doom new wads are quite rare thing, notable ones - even rarer.

2. Mega megawad - more than 32 levels.

3. A set of levels sustained in the context of quality.

In first episode, as as sort of additional condition, no rocket launcher or chainsaw been used. All episodes can be found in playlist here.

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.8.2, UV difficulty.

* Lots of secrets.

* Quite a noticeable shortage of ammo in E2 & E5.

* E3M2 in some places reminds map from original game.

* Overall idea of level design follows the original. E1 - techno basic, E2 - combination of different layouts, E3 - otherwordly type. E4 at one time was supposed to be in 2002ado, while E5 was inspired by SIGIL from John Romero.

* You can telefrag 3 cyberdemons in this wad.

Pros:

+ E1M3, E1M4, E1M7, E1M8.

+ E2M4, E2M8 - "Escape From Babel". M8 is a large arena with a fortress in the middle. Inside the fortress cyberdemon awaits. Considering that there are not many rounds of ammo during the episode as a whole available, this element becomes especially noticeable on the last map.

+ E3M3, E3M5 - "Putrescent Dirge". A branched labyrinth and about 700 enemies. E3M6, E3M9.

+ E4M2. E4M7 - "Impious Alcazar". Location with many platforms and elevation changes.

+ E5M4 - "Valley of Afterlife", E5M9 - "A Doomed Odyssey", E5M10 - "Plasma", E5M8 - "Naberius".

Contras:

- E5M10. Concept with teleporting mastermind, as well as a cyberdemon, probably looks good on a paper, but in case of gameplay sequence rather annoying when you have less then 1 second to shoot one. Not saying it's impossible to deal with, but in case M10's maps, which are supposed to be fun, this aspect drop down this part a little.

Secret levels.

10 in total.

https://www.old-games.ru/forum/attachments/2022ado_bunny-png.273638/

Description tells not to expect something special. As for example E3M10 & E4M10 just represent small arenas with a lot of enemies on them, while only remarkable thing about it is level structure. In this probably only E5M10 stay opposite in compare to the rest of secret maps. M9 in first three episodes is hard to find, in case if you don't have a level map - up to impossible. So. If you are not hardly stick to 100% of everything, or you see Hexen puzzles in your nightmares, then probably it will better to pass them. Otherwise, well, I warned.

1. E1M3 -> E1M9. Requires pressing a switch on the helipad. To do it, in turn, the path is blocked by several barriers, finding switches for which, without having a map, seems to be an hard task. As a consequence you need to find a secret with a level map first.

2. {exit not found} ? -> E1M10.

3. {unsolved} E2M5 -> E2M9. Require to deal with a long list of switches to get access to the secret exit, but main sequence stick to deal with the door on the south. I've spend some time to look around but didn't find a way to open it. Seems to I've missed one somewhere.
4. {exit not found} ? -> E2M10.

5. E3M6 -> E3M9. You need to get into the orange cube in the center of the map. To do this you need to raise 4 platforms near by. The platforms are raised by 4 extra hidden switches, access to one of which will require the grab of a yellow skull, while the grabbing of which, in turn, is a separate puzzle.

6. E3M9 -> E3M10. You need to go into the orange passage near the main exit.

7. E4M2 -> E4M9. You will need to raise three platforms and get the blue key.

8. E4M9 -> E4M10. The passage behind the wall in the southeast of the map, not far from the point of start.

9. E5M4 -> E5M9. Not far from the main exit, you need to press the switch in the form of a skull. The wall will fall, a staircase will form. By going down it you can find a teleport - it leads to a secret exit.

10. E5M9 -> E5M10. Apparently you need to press a switch in the warehouse area, although here I'm not sure if this plays any role for the secret exit. Anyhow, in the northeastern part of the map you can find a little visible dark passage - this is the exit to M10.

What is the Doomworld Ironman League?

The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom!

In January 2024 the DWIronman League dies to MAP12: Black Rain from Community Chest 3 (-complevel 9), made by @RottKing. Voted in as the 99th Most Memorable Map - which is quite an achievement for one's first released singleplayer map - this expansive, dark, grungy map is the largest by size in the megawad. MAP29 might have almost double the amount of monsters, but don't think this map isn't easy. It will wear you down as you explore this complex. Had to continue the tradition of picking single maps for start of the year, which started... last year, but you get the drift. Good luck, Marine!

Essential Info

  • Doom II (doom2.wad) + Community Chest 3 CC3.WAD loaded.
  • Compatibility level 9, or "Boom (strict)" for ZDoom derivative ports.
  • 1 map, on the MAP12 slot.
  • Time estimate (if survival): 30-75 minutes
  • The .bex file is optional to load. If your source port of choice supports internal .deh files, there's no need to.

> Download Community Chest 3

prboom-plus.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file cchest3.wad (-bex cchest3.bex) -complevel 9 -skill 4 -record demo_name.lmp -warp 12

Rules:

Spoiler

  • There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared:

    • To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month.

    • To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) preparation that is strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition.

  • UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level.
  • Demos (i.e. any demo which can play back vanilla demo files, such as PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity, DSDADoom, Woof, Chocolate...), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread.
    • If you stream your run on Twitch, please highlight/save it so that it doesn't go missing in case someone's very late with the obituaries.
  • No additional WADs may be loaded. Cosmetic WADs are fine if they're purely cosmetic.
  • No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run, its category 3 included.
  • No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice.
  • If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit.
  • You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than their competitors will rank higher than them.
  • You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point.
  • You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details.
  • If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result.
  • Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will stop your run immediately. You will still be registered as entering the next map (i.e. the one which you never entered) using a calculation to figure out what the intermission time would have been.
  • If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]):

  1. This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players. *
  2. This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players.
  3. This is not a blind run. While I have not outright played it, I've watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge.

* "Reasonable" in this instance asks you to consider whether the details in question are worth committing to memory. As in, you would thank the person who gave you this information with a straight face and not expect to be laughed at for being an utter berk.

Unable to remember the name of this modhttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142802-unable-to-remember-the-name-of-this-mod/ Basically it was this mod that added Doom Eternal weapons, monsters and mechanics to doom 2. I remember seeing it in a youtube video that showcased it alongside a few other mods. Anyone got any idea on how this mod may be called? Tried looking up things like "Doom Eternal mod for Doom 2" but no luck yet.

me think it be like this, but what should add more? me would be welcomed to Imput from others

slotz

1 - Fist, Kick, Fireaxe, Chainsaw

2 - Beretta 92f, Silenced H&K P7M13

3 - Steyr SSG 69

4 - Styer Aug , MP5

5 - C4, Hockey Puck Grenade

6 - M60E3

PROPHECIES OF CHAOS (a podium mostly to give reviews from)https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/133363-prophecies-of-chaos-a-podium-mostly-to-give-reviews-from/ My corner of the internet to give wad reviews on.

Ive been playing Doom since 1994 when a friend of mine gave me his disks and told me to go straight home and play this game. Ive been hooked ever since. The first thing ive done on every computer or laptop ive seen since is install Doom and play the first couple of levels. I was heavily into playing user made wads back in the 90s into the early 2000s. As i got older and busier, with work and family, i found myself with no time to sit at the computer downloading and playing the endless amount of content to be found. Time passed and still got my Doom fix on xbox. I happen to love the two new games as well but the originals still hold my heart. The Unity port was seriously the best thing to happen to me as far as gaming is concerned. After about 15 years of playing just Doom 1, 2, 3, 2016 and Etenal i finally had access to pwads again. It took just a few months to play through all of the Unity downloads before i found myself cleaning up my sons old desktop and getting right proper Doom running on PC again. Now after a little over half a year of devouring as much as i have time to play and inspired by the entire community here on Doomworld. I have begun what is meant to be my very own review corner. I mean it to be a way for me to get even more enjoyment out of the game we all love. I hope it to be an outlet for me to give my thoughts, opinions and my support to the creators i appreciate so much. At 45 years old none of my friends or family wants to listen to what i think about the levels im playing so im hoping maybe some of you here on Doomworld will. If not thats ok too, im willing to make this a journal for my own documentation. My plan is to start writing notes as i play but i havnt begun with that. Ive been wanting to start this thread for a while now and having just finished a full playthrough of Community Chest 4 i figured now was the right time while i have the latest thing still fully fresh in my mind. I'll leave off on that note and come back after composing my very first full wad review. Thanks to anyone who reads this now or in the future and especially to anyone who ever returns for more preaching from the pulpit of the prophet.😀

A open world Doom wad - Is it possible?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/109953-a-open-world-doom-wad-is-it-possible/ By open world Doom wad I mean something like Red Dead Redemption 2, Spider Man, Maybe even GTA, Now the idtech engine is designed for games that have a forced story, But what if an open world Doom wad was possible? Many open world games have 2 ways to play: Make your own fun, Go off the story and just mess around. Massacre random people (I do that in GTA) Drive around without any care, Seeing how much destruction is possible. But if its open world than these would probably be the routes to take: You must finish the main campaign, and than you are sent off to a open world city to do things in like go into a room with a monster spawner to practice and stuff, Enter buildings and things like that. Option 2 would require mods. You have one area where you can follow the story, But theres one area where you can drive around, and do everything in option 1. There are many other routes to take but these are my basic ideas for a open world Doom wad.

Good newcomer/newbie wads?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142597-good-newcomernewbie-wads/ Let's imagine a person who doesn't know how to play Doom: No knowledge on how weapons & monsters operate (besides common sense of course), no ability to read mappers' exploration cues besides obvious ones and no knowledge of gimmicks like tag 666. What would you sugget to such person, besides the IWADs?

Some points to consider:

1) Does the wad introduce its gameplay gradually?

2) Does the wad have a smooth difficulty curve and does it ever get a bit too hot?

3) How much do the maps rely on player's prior knowledge of Doom's mechanics?

The only things that come to my mind are Scythe and Freedoom. But I'm sure out of thousands of wads made there should be more!

Doomworld Community Console (Doom 64 / PSX / ...) WADs Listhttps://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/129493-doomworld-community-console-doom-64-psx-wads-list/ I, once again, didn't manage to find a "ace of decks" list and, well, decide to create another one. As you probably know we are already have Heretic / Hexen list here, Doom one here, as well as hardest wads there. What we didn't have before was a console related list.

During past few years an interest to Doom ports seems to be raised high. Doom 64 remake released on PC, here and there you sometimes can see PSX, 32X and ever GBA related discussions. But, as it's also sometimes goes, it's still hard to track all of it.

The list currently not contain any raiting system due to fact there are only few "enough known" wads currently exist around. Instead of it here will be separate section for each console, sorted by release date (year). Mainly looking to track 64 and PSX wads, but if you want to submit another platform with something interested attached to it then it's possible too.

30.05.22. @Immorpher shared a huge table with 64 related wads and maps, which significantly expanded the list. Currently half of the table added to the topic.

31.05.22. Another half of the table mostly added, just left to figure out around 7 lines from it.

1.06.22. Missing lines added, as well as additional DropBox link.

30.10.22. @taufan99 shared links to 3 PsyDoom related maps. So there is 4 of them now in total.

5.11.22. SNES and 32X sections been added.

13.11.22. Sega Dreamcast section added. The sequence of sections is rearranged according to the time chronology (well, more / less).

20.11.22. One PSX inspired and three brand new 64 related wads (two in wip stage) been added.

9.03.23 / 10.03.23. "The Forgotten Chapter", PSX related wad, released after 13+ years of development. In addition to it another PSX one been added.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Current WADs List. Expounders: 10 (@UnknDoomer, @Immorpher, @styd051, @scwiba, @Muusi, @ludicrous_peridot, @taufan99, @Impboy4, @Dantosking, @DoodlesGDX). Wads: 47. Maps: 61. PSX and 64 were counted only. Unfinished wads/maps, iwads, PSX Doom Forever not count here.

Instruction for how to run ports via Steam, old school way, located here.

{{{PSX}}}

Actual source ports:

1. [GEC] Master Edition (2018). Currently in beta stage. The main idea is circle around original iwads, but some additional / "modern" levels support planned as well. [GEC / DZDoom] tag.

2. PsyDoom (2019)

In compare to Doom CE making a bet on experience which is close as possible to original title. Still, by other hand depends what option your pick in CE. Currently doesn't have much external content to load into.

Maps list (PSY):

1. Caldera Of Wretchedness (2021) {1X}. [PD] tag.

2. Doomsday of UAC (2022) {1X}. Classic map long back from 1994 reacreated for PsyDoom.

3. 1 on 1 (2022) {1X}. Specific map from an originally huge pack that contained around 1830 files. For more information you might check this and this topics.

4. ITWASPSX (2022) {1X}.

5. Warlock (2023) {1X}.

6. Welcome to Die PSX (2023) {1X}.

7. Devil May Die (2023) {1X}.

Wads list (PSY):

1. Fastest Showels 8 (2023) {1x8} [PD].

2. Crushing Depths: Security Station (2022) {?} [PD] [WIP].

Technical stuff:

1. Minor Sprite Fix (2022)

2. Doom CE (2021)

2.1. Doom 64 CE Reworked (2022)

Quote

When starting the mod for the first time, you will be prompted on what preset to use. They can be changed later by going into the Features Menu and choosing Choose Features Preset.

Faithful: Features will be set as faithful as possible to the original.

Faithful Enhanced: Some enhancements such as smooth animations, ambient sounds, gore and particles trails will be enabled, but gameplay will remain faithful to the original.

Modern (Default): More enhancements will be enabled, and some timings are better balanced for keyboard and mouse input. In PSX DOOM, this will apply DOOM 64-style gradient lighting and will add Arch-Viles and additional Masterminds to the original campaigns.

Experimental: Same as Modern, but with new visuals. Music style will change over time, and monsters will be slightly faster.

Stick to GzDoom, has a lot of features. Currently support Doom PSX, Doom 64, Final Doom as well as several pwads and gameplay modifications. [CE] tag.

Quote

Since it runs on the latest GZDoom (4.7.1 at the time of writing), that means that it is compatible with other mods. It's been tested with mods such as Corruption Cards, Project Brutality, QC : DE, Death Foretold, Embers of Armageddon, Guncaster, Trailblazer, GMOTA, Russian Overkill, Complex Doom, Legendoom Lite, Pandemonia, and many others (NOTE: Support is more limited in Doom 64 because some mods depend on Doom 2 textures and Doom 2's actor heights).

corruption_cards_64-png.263026

Quote

Corruption Cards (3.4+) deserves a special mention because this mod now has built-in support for it. Story text maps will skip the card selection dialog, and monsters exclusive to the PSX and D64 were included as monster groups. It adds tremendous replay value to these campaigns, so it strongly recommended if you are planning on playing them again and want to spice up the gameplay a little.

Wads & Maps list (PSX):

*. PSX Doom Forever (original, videos) (2000), GzDoom / Zadronum Build (2014) {?}. Trash/joke TC made by russian community, or rather random local pirates, for PS1.

1. Console Doom, original old topic (2002) {1x32} [ZDoom]. Looks like a first major attempt to bring exclusive console levels and atmosphere on the PC platform.

@Muusi:

Quote

kickass wad that mixes PSX Doom and 64 stuff and IIRC is completely vanilla compatible.

@Kaiser:

Quote

Consoledoom is a collection of maps from Playstation, Jaguar, GBA, Nintendo64 versions of Doom, so there are some modfied oringinals, and some exclusive maps like Twilight Descends etc.

3. Doom: The Lost Episode (2009) {1x9}. Wad for Ultimate Doom that act as unofficial fifth episode. [Inspired by PSX style; For shorter use in further - IBPSX]

{{{Doom 64}}}

Note. Some wads & maps, that included in specific source ports by default, will not be listed in wads list to not create confusion. Also, in this case, regarding original @Immorpher table:

Quote

Some map sets which are listed multiple times, because they are ported to a different engine on that date. This is because porting often has changes, or even additions.

Some were ported to CE in the add-ons section, but they also originally were on other Doom 64 ports earlier, such as EX and Absolution. So for your list they might appear as a single entry with multiple ports supported.

That means that, for example, Absolution TC maps, that also supported in Doom CE now, will not be mentioned separately, same as The Lost Levels from official Doom 64 PC release, that also took a place in Doom CE.

Source ports / Adaptations:

1. Doom 64 Absolution TC (2003). Contain 6 new levels. Remastered version is currently in WIP stage here. [ATC] tag.

1.1. Absolution TC Remastered (2021 / 2022). [OR] - tag from point 7.

2. Doom 64 EX (2008). [EX] tag. Originally mainly known as most close to original game atmosphere (well, at least was till official remaster release). Most of the wads & maps were constructed to work with it.

2.1. Doom 64 EX Reloaded (2020 / 2022). Altered version of well known source port.

3. 3DGE64 (2015). Port with several "modern" features.

4. Doom 64 Retribution (2016) [RB] tag. GzDoom related port.

5. Brutal Doom 64 (2016) [Wiki] [BD] tag.

5.1. Absolution TC remake for BD 64 (2020)

5.2. BD 64 Unofficial Update (2022)

6. ImDoom 64 (2018). Fork based on 64 EX.

7. Official PC Release (2020). [OR] tag.

8. Doom 64 EX Plus (2022). [EX+] tag. Basically further development of original EX concept made by @Gibbon.

9. Doom 64 Super EX Plus (2023) [SEP] tag. @styd051: "Super EX+ this is a custom port that adds a lot of custom content for DOOM 64, it was made for mappers to use on their maps, or for their future megawads with more custom content on their mods".

*. DoomBuilder64 (2018). Map editor.

Gameplay mods.

Might require specific source port to run, usually GzDoom:

1. Super Doom 64 (2012).

2. Doom 64 Unabsolved (2015). New monsters, weapons and so on.

3. Yuki'z ZDoom 64 (2016). Basically ZDoom related adaptation.

4. Consolitation Prize (2017). Gameplay mod that works with most of the 64 ports, as well as PSX.

5. 64doom (2014/2017). Attempt to bring original Doom to 64 platform.

6. Doom 64 Absolution MP (2018). Multiplayer add-on. Must work with Retribution as well.

7. Doom 64 for Vanilla (2019). Bring Doom 64 sprites / sounds to vanilla wads.

8. D64ifier (2021). Add Doom 64 atmopshere to random pwad.

9. Morph 64 (2021). Gameplay mod. It replaces the Doom 2 sprite and sound assets with Doom 64 ones. But it doesn't stay 100% true to Doom 64 as there are extra graphics, sound, and minor gameplay changes. It is aimed to maintain Zandronum multiplayer compatibility as well as modern GZDoom compatibility. This is what DeadTech used.

10. DEHACKED PSX Sound (2021).

11. Doom 64 WMI Redux (?).

Quote

I hear Doom 64 WMI, is a Doom 64 "Weapons, monsters, and items" replacer mod for ZDoom engines. Doom 64 Retribution used this as a base before porting maps over.

12. GZ64 (?). Hard to say to what it's related for, without specific check.

[WIP] 13. Doom 64: Unseen Evil (2023). Modification for GZDoom that transplants the Doom 64 atmosphere into Doom and Doom II.

Note. There are some chances that random maps and, perhaps, wads might still remain in some backup folders, like one here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/q8nyzhj3hbs1x9x/AABuS-mDkXcqE9QpEbG_FjBFa & https://www.dropbox.com/sh/umadvxy27hmnyf4/AACParfSDpMUPdwACGJSvOgYa?dl=0, made by @Immorpher, but in case there is no any information about them, ever in compare to one that exist in the map list currently, it's hard to track one. If you know/recognize something else - drop a message, I'll update the list.

For the [ATC] version of Outcast {1x7} (2005) look here, Redemption Denied {1x8} (2005) here and for Reckoning {1x9} (2008) here. Old page with all tree wads can be found here. Currently all supported in [CE] by default as well, while Outcast there fit into "The Doomsday Levels" section.

10. Teleport Station (2011) [EX]

*. Whispers of Fear, Heat Center, Error, Blind Killer (2011) {4X} [EX]. All four maps done by one author, C30N9. By other hand, it seems, wad called "The Mort" consist from this four maps, so this the reason why those maps don't have a specific number.

Catching Up - Celestin's review thread (now playing: Obituary)https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/138088-catching-up-celestins-review-thread-now-playing-obituary/ Inspired by similiar topics by @Capellan and @Jokin, plus a question in DWmegawad Club whether to replay already-covered wads, I decided to post my write-ups here. I'm mostly focusing on wads that the Club has already played, but I haven't. It's likely going to be less regular than DWMC, I'll try to upload multiple write-ups in one post for clarity sake. Feel free to comment.

Unless stated otherwise, my personal rules are:

  • I use the latest version of Woof! with an appropriate complevel;
  • I try to get all kills and secrets;
  • I pistol-start the maps;
  • I use saves, though I try to avoid saving mid-combat.

Wads played:

Spoiler
  • Community Chest 2 (starts in this post)
  • UAC Ultra (starts here)
  • MAYhem 2012 (starts here)
  • Hell Revealed (starts here)
  • Hellbound (starts here)
  • Doom 404 (starts here)
  • UNWELCOME (starts here)
  • Ultimate Doom (starts here)
  • SIGIL (starts here)
  • Doom II: Hell on Earth (starts here)
  • No Rest for the Living (starts here)
  • Master Levels for Doom II (starts here)
  • TNT: Evilution (starts here)
  • The Plutonia Experiment (starts here)
  • DBP7: The Merry Christmassy Doom Project (starts here)
  • Skulltiverse (starts here)
  • DBP19: A Doomer Boards Christmas Carol (starts here)
  • Double Impact (starts here)
  • Scythe (ongoing, starts here)
  • Obituary (ongoing, starts here)

The first wad I'm playing is Community Chest 2. The reason why? Well, I joined DWMC in February 2023 and CC2 was played in January. That way, I'll be able to say I finished the whole 2023 seasson of the Club (hopefully).

Community Chest 2 is one of the wads I tried early on (read: in 2020), but gave up after reaching (you guessed it) MAP05. This isn't a blind playthrough, I've seen footage from CC2, so I more or less know what to expect.
MAP01-MAP07

MAP01: The Furnace by Erik Alm

Spoiler

I don't think I need to introduce this gentleman.

The Furnace feels like something from Scythe's second act: a compact base with some nifty details (like the lights in a set of stairs, "illuminating" the floor below) and mostly non-threatening foes, with the exception of a single fight. I am talking about the part where you jump into a hole to find yourself inside the titular furnace: a fiery basement with little room, a pair of hell knights and an inconvenient landing spot on top of a berserk pack. Nope, I'm not trying to punch them out in a room this small, at least until one of the nobles is dead.

The trap by the exit is clearly telegraphed and completely toothless, since Erik didn't lock a door behind you and you can just escape, instead of fighting against imps and revenants in limited space.

Not a bad start, a bit too brown for my liking (though it makes the furnace part stand out), but it's quick and makes a good first impression.

MAP02: Coolant Platform by iori

Spoiler

I'm getting strong Knee Deep in the Dead vibes here, with generic textures, E1 monster roster (aside from cacodemons at the end) and arsenal limited to shotgun and chaingun. Oddly, two out of three secrets contain rockets, despite no rocket launcher being present.

The combat is a mixed bag, iori throws large groups of basic enemies at you, which to me is the Doom equivalent of fast food - unsofisticated, sure, but entertaining in its simplicity. The barons and cacodemons at the end, though, it feels grindy to hack them with basic guns. I do wish there was a rocket launcher, it would have made the final parts smoother.

In the end, there are some cool Boom tricks early on, but other than that, it's pretty mediocre.

MAP03: Slige Control by The Flange Peddler

Spoiler

According to Doomwiki, Slige Control is a sole survivour of a lost freakmapping contest (a project where participants are improving maps created by a random level generator), which was added to CC2 at 11th hour and somehow didn't cause the project to be rejected from /idgames archive, despite its ban on map randomly-generated maps.

It's hard for me to talk about Slige Control, because I'm not sure where Slige ends and where The Flange Peddler begins (the original, Slige-generated map is also lost). The whole red key room set-up seems like something an algorithm would spit out, it's very symmetrical and repetitive. You need to press four switches to activate another set of switches to lower a platform with a key. Yeah, I don't think a human mind could come up with this and say "this is great, let's put it in the map". I do like the fight here, with cacodemons and lost souls, especially after finding a super shotgun, placed in a random side room. But the details like a burst pipe, ceiling in the red key room or some of support columns - that has to be a deliberate work.

Slige Control isn't bad, but I think its backstory is more interesting than the map itself.

MAP04: Deja Vu by Gene Bird

Spoiler

Okay, this one isn't good. Deja Vu consists of a linear set of basic rooms, where you shoot small groups of random enemies with SSG. It feels very dated, repetitive and too long. The map was released standalone a year prior, so it's safe to call it a filler.

MAP05: Elixir by RjY

Spoiler

Cool premise, but the execution is hit-or-miss.

Your mission is to infiltrate a factory hidden within a cave complex and sabotage a health vial manufacturing line. The early fights pits you against hordes of imps and hitscanners, so you might expect a fun romp. However, once you enter the plant proper, everything changes. Elixir is stingy with resources, cramped and loves repopulating recently-cleared areas with more enemies. The main obstacle, though, is a cyberdemon, which appears in the starting area after you turn off the factory. You need to rely a lot on berserk and infighting to save enough shells to take him down, as the exit is in the same place and requires a bit of careful maneuvering to reach it.

I like the look of the map, the factory, while small, does look convincing (unlike, you know, MAP12 from Doom 2) and there are some nice details, like a pallet jack or a crane grabbing a box. Elixir made me drop CC2 the first time I played it, it's one of those maps that are hostile to blind players and requires a foreknowledge to beat. Even when you know what to do, it feels grindy and takes too long to finish. I feel like this one would benefit from better balance, it's still the best map of CC2 so far, though that's more because MAP05 is the first substantial one.

MAP06: The View by Lutrov71

Spoiler

Good map, especially considering Lutrov was 11 years old when he made The View. It's a large techbase, surrounded by pools of green slime, well-detailed, though a bit flat in places. The combat is mostly unthreatening and leaves little impression, with the exception of the final fight, where you can release like a third of map's monsters and trigger a huge infight.

One gripe I have are the broken secrets, likely a result of testing the map in ZDoom. One can't be triggered at all, other can be accessed by an archvile jump, but since it's at the very end of the map, I don't think it's worth the effort. Other than that, it's an okay map.

MAP07: To Hell and Back by The Flange Peddler

Spoiler

Here's a techbase with a twist. After passing through a couple of rooms and taking down weak monsters, you enter a room with an exit, but it needs a red skull key to open. The goal is to unlock a nearby teleporter, travel to hell and retrieve the missing key from there. The problem is, you have to search through the whole damned base for a set of three keys, while dealing with incidental trash and a handful of teleporting revenant traps. The base is confusing to navigate, even though The Flange Peddler tries to help the player by demonstrating what switches do after being pressed.

Once the portal is opened, you can finally take a trip to hell, find the key, battle the MAP07 crew with some friends and return to exit. To Hell and Back feels like a showcase of Boom magic, there are translucent windows, conveyor belts and teleporting items, not to mention the red tint in the hell section. While I enjoyed the map, I feel like streamlining the techbase part would have improved the experience considerably.

Sharing some MIDI (UPDATED 1/19/2024)https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/105947-sharing-some-midi-updated-1192024/ January 2024 update

Hello! I figured I should update this post with a few tunes I've worked on the past few years. So here ya go, about 60 songs. I also tried to fix many of my earlier MIDIs to try and remove bloat. There shouldn't be any ridiculous sized midi files anymore, though most of these are still on the large side. As always, these are free for anyone to use if you choose but please provide credit.

A few notes: Good bit of variety I think, some rockers, moody stuff, ambient stuff, stupid stuff.. but most of these are fairly short-ish, usually less than 3 mins. Probably more suited for low par maps unless you don't mind the repetition. I've been trying to get better at kind of long form compositions and vg music proper but still a way off I think. With that in mind and the different genres, some of these admittedly may not mesh well with DOOM.

These were sequenced using the Roland GS soundset, so will likely sound best played back in the same manner. I also removed most instances of me using "picked bass", as many soundfonts really like to jack the volume way up on that particular instrument (looking at you, gzdoom.sf2). Also shoutout to Tiddles, his hand is on a few of the tracks where noted in the readme.

The attached .zip has the midi files, and for convenience's sake I'll add a link to a directory of mp3 recordings using the gm.sf2 soundfont.

ORIGINAL POST

Spoiler

A few months back my friend Tiddles loaned me guitar pro 5, so I tried my hand at sequencing some midis for Doom. I'd like to share some with you, feel free to use any as you like. Since I'm still new at this, don't expect anything on par with the lush orchestrations of BTSX or Ancient Aliens; these are all relatively simplistic, partly by design and partly due to my own ineptitude. I will at least say that most of these are influenced more by the custom MIDIs I've heard while playing Doom than any of Bobby Prince's stuff.

Anyways, this is more a quick dump for feedback. Tiddles and I's objective is to make a full music replacement wad for 32-map megawads, mostly to use for hosting on zandronum. Many megawads have either vanilla music or questionable music choices, and I'm tired of using mm2mus.wad over and over. And while there are many other fantastic options on that front, we just figured to make our own. To that end, you can find a replacement wad of our midis for one of my favorite old-school mapsets "Dark Covenant" here.

Below you'll find a list and short description of the midi tracks attached.

Spoiler

duskimp.mid -> "Dusk Imp" - slow pink floyd-ish thing

marlboromancubus.mid -> "Marlboro Mancubus" - chugging rock, might be good for a d_dm2int

mountain.mid -> "Mountain" - slow, moody

baronofheck.mid -> "Baron of Heck" - Ministry-like into a thrasher

bluenipple.mid -> "Blue Nipple" - kind of dance-y and spooky

cacoballad.mid -> "Cacoballad" - sad and slow into sad and a little faster, might be a good d_read_m

canadiandoom.mid -> "Canadian Doom" - upbeat rocka

crutch.mid -> "Crutch" - trying (and failing) at a morricone meets dance-y thing. Not so fond of this one

desert.mid -> "Desert I" - another pink floydish thing

minormeef.mid -> "Minor Meef" - power metal tribute to the almighty MiFu

pinkdivision.mid -> "Pink Division" - simultaneously ripping-off paying homage to New Order and Floyd

pinkiedisco.mid -> "Pinkie Disco" - more trance-ish than disco tbh

revwaltz.mid -> "Revenant's Waltz" - slow sad waltz

spookybird.mid -> "Spooky Bird" - yet more pink floydish stuff

squaresoul.mid -> "Square Soul" - synth rocker

sugarslayer.mid -> "Sugarslayer" - SLAYEERRRRRRR

zombiemanblues.mid -> "Zombieman Blues" - took a chord progression from Tiddles and did a trip-hop type thing with it

On a technical note regarding playback, anything based on the Roland GS soundset should be decent enough. GZDoom should sound fine out of the box, but if you're using Zand then Windows' default synth will likely bork playback of some of the faster ones (Sugar Slayer in particular), so I'd recommend using a softsynth proper. As for recommended soundfonts, I'd just go with good ol scc1t2.sf2 or gm.sf2. There's also DooM.sf2 that I have which sounds great, but I have no idea who made it or how I acquired it. If you don't want to deal with any of that or for those whose have effed midi playback, I've converted all these files to .mp3 using the gm.sf2 soundfont which you can download or listen to here.

Does anyone make custom Wolfenstein 3d levels?https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/119905-does-anyone-make-custom-wolfenstein-3d-levels/ I was wondering if anyone makes classic custom Wolf 3d levels... levels that are almost exactly like the original Wolf 3d levels..

the only thing you would have to do is get custom enemies [the Nazis] custom weapons [the original Wolf 3d weapons] and custom textures and decorations....

I was just wondering if there was such a thing... [and could someone tell me where to get these textures and weapons and such? Realm667 has nothing....]

Endless Random /idgames WAD Adventures #075https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/142386-endless-random-idgames-wad-adventures-075/ 711385819_eriwad20-03-01.png.076966588933161860194e7953b9941c.png
